Our Fine Art Giclée paper choices.
Selected to satisfy both creative demands and budget.
Hahnemühle Photo Rag® 308
Hahnemühle Photo Rag® 308 is probably the most popular fine art Giclée paper on the market today, a 100% cotton rag media offering superb archival properties. Photo Rag features a smooth, flat matte surface and a heavy weight 308gsm base. This is a very versatile paper, equally popular with photographers, painters and illustrators. With its acid and lignin free composition it conforms to ISO 9706, museum quality for highest age resistance – you can be confident images printed on Photo Rag will remain vibrant, and as intended, for many years.
Hahnemühle German Etching
Hahnemühle German Etching features a strong surface texture and delivers a wonderfully hand crafted feel. At 310gsm it is one of the heaviest weight media we offer and its surface takes a lot of ink delivering a depth and vibrancy. The base is 100% alpha cellulose, is acid and lignin free and conforms to ISO museum grade for age resistance. This paper is very popular for art reproductions due to its assimilation with traditional artist media. But it also lends an alternative dimension to photographic printing.
Hahnemühle FineArt Pearl
Hahnemühle FineArt Pearl features a semi-gloss surface and a heavyweight 285gsm alpha cellulose base, delivering superb archival levels of age resistance. The surface has a very light texture, but is essentially smooth with degree of sheen. We think this paper works well for black and white photographs and the surface finish is not all that dissimilar to a traditional glossy fibre based darkroom made print that has been slow dried for lower sheen. The surface is harder wearing than the likes of PhotoRag, although it’s not up to the same standards of a C-Type. Mounts well for a fine art Giclée.
Hahnemühle Bamboo is a unique fine art print media with a 290gsm heavy weight base, a matte surface and delicate texture. As the name suggests, this paper is made from 90% bamboo fibres and 10% cotton. It’s a very natural and sustainable product produced in an environmentally friendly way. This is a great alternative to other more conventional Giclée media where artists can add an extra dimension to their work.
Canson® Baryta Photographique II
Canson® Infinity Baryta Photographique II features a genuine barium sulphate coating, as found in traditional fibre based silver black and white papers used for darkroom exposure. Consequently, this is an ideal paper where the look and feel of a traditional black and white print is desired, but it is not practical to make in the darkroom because, for example, the image is in a digital form only. The surface also resembles closely that of a slow dried gloss fibre based darkroom print: a low gloss sheen and very smooth, virtually no texture. The paper is also at home when used for a variety of other image types, not just monochrome.
Canson® Aquarelle Rag is an adaptation of their world renound, mould made, watercolour paper – for Giclée printing. A 100% cotton rag, 310gsm paper, this media is perfect for reproduction of watercolours, pastels and drawings and boasts the highest possible archival qualities for this print type. It also lends a beautiful dimension to photographs where a high degree of artistic stylisation is desired. Aquarelle delivers a highly crafted look and feel, with a more pronounced texture than, for example, Hahnemühle German Etching.
Fotospeed Smooth Cotton
Fotospeed Smooth Cotton is a 100% cotton rag, acid free Giclée media with a very smooth, flat matte, surface. This paper is a real alternative to Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308 where budget is an important factor, but where you don’t want to compromise on the features of Photo Rag. The paper takes a high ink load and is therefore very good at delivering the best from highly saturated images and the deepest blacks in monochrome printing.
Fotospeed Platinum Etching
Fotospeed’s answer to Hahnemühle German Etching, Platinum Etching offers an alternative where budget is a consideration but where you don’t want to compromise on quality. Platinum Etching features a heavy 285gsm weight and a highly textured matte surface finish, ideal for reproduction of artworks like watercolours, pastels and drawings, but also lends a new dimension to photographs. 100% acid free with a base made from 25% cotton and and 75% alpha cellulose, this media is also recognised by the Fine Art Trade guild in their Art Sure range.
