Adox XT-3 – Ascorbic Acid-Based B&W Film Developer

Adox XT-3 is a fine grain, ascorbic acid-based black and white film developer containing no hydroquinone or boric acid. Its formulation is very close to Kodak XTOL, though not identical, as the original XTOL formula has never been released. Development times are similar to XTOL and can be used as a starting point, but personal testing is always recommended.

This is a speed-increasing developer, delivering full box speed with ease while maintaining smooth tonality and excellent detail. XT-3 also offers improved environmental and handling benefits over similar developers such as XTOL, Excel, or LegacyPro Eco, with:

  • Free of borates

  • Biodegradable complexing agents

  • Increased solubility

  • Enhanced keeping properties

A 1 L mix will process 8–10 rolls of film. If storing the mixed solution, note that darkening of the liquid is a sign the developer may be past its shelf life.

I’ve recently switched to Adox XT-3 for most of my important work (i.e. photo shoots) and have found it to be a fantastic developer. Using Xtol development times, the negatives come out beautifully and I think are at the very least on a par with Xtol if not better. Being available to just make up 1 litre of stock is an advantage too if you don’t want the huge bulk which you have to mix up with Xtol.
