Ilford ID11 is one of the most recognisable and widely used black and white film developers worldwide, and has been offered by Ilford for decades. It is a fine grain developer and very much an “all rounder” – if in doubt, almost any B&W film will perform well in ID11. Negatives will display a good balance of fine grain, good range of tonality, sharpness and without loss of emulsion speed. Very acceptable larger enlargements will be delivered if desired. ID11 is essentially a near identical version of Kodak D76, that being the most popular black and white film developer. The main difference is ID11 is supplied in 2 sachets for dissolving in water where A is first dissolved and then B is dissolved into the A solution as opposed to the single pack formulation of D76. This is designed to make ID11 slightly easier to dissolve.

As ID11 is supplied in a powder form, as long as the packs remain sealed, shelf life is considerable, many years. The down side, over a developer supplied as a liquid concentrate, is you have to dissolve and make up the solution, hence why liquid concentrates are popular.

The 1L pack will dissolve with water to make 1L of stock solution. This can be used as is, or diluted 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 – but test or read up on the effects of different dilutions. If using as stock, then you can re-use by extending the development time each time (there is data available for this). If diluting the stock solution 1:1, 1:2 or 1:3, development times will be longer, and our recommendation is to then use it as a 1 shot, and discard the diluted solution after 1 use.
