Ilford Multigrade FIBRE BASED Classic: the fine art all rounder
A double weight, traditional fibre based [FB] paper, Ilford Multigrade CLASSIC is the evolution of the old Multigrade IV Fibre based. The paper features a slightly warmer base tone, but it’s not a warmtone paper and this can be varied with developer choice. The paper is capable of delivering intense blacks and beautiful tonal separation. Contrast, as with all multigrade papers, is variable with normal filtration and if the Ilford Multigrade Filters are used, or an Ilford multigrade enlarger head, a full range of grades will be available. Used without filtration the paper will yield a typically mid contrast of 2-3.
Surface qualities:
- Gloss: when left to dry naturally, this yields a delightfully smooth low gloss finish. But the paper can be glazed in the traditional way, if preferred, to deliver a very high gloss surface.
- Matte: this is quite a flat matte, with little sheen and a beautiful fine art finish. Emulated by many inkjet paper products!
Washing after processing
As a fibre based paper please be aware of the extended washing requirements due to it’s lack of plastic coating (present in resin coated RC papers). This is a good video introduction to working with FB papers:
If you don’t have a darkroom in which to try this paper – there can be no better reason to put one together! Remember, a darkroom can be simply a blacked out room for a couple of hours, you don’t need a dedicated space.
