Ilford Multigrade FIBRE BASED Warmtone. A very desirable paper.
A double weight, traditional fibre based [FB] paper, Ilford Multigrade FB WARMTONE was first released around 25 years ago and has established itself as the most desirable fine art photographic silver gelatine paper. This paper is a delight to work with, and many masterpieces by great darkroom operators have been made with it. But the novice printer also finds great satisfaction in the ease of use, beautiful tonal separation and delightful warm tones which are superbly versatile: this is a very satisfying paper to use, and will flatter your printing skills, even with a tough negative!
Contrast, as with all multigrade papers, is variable with normal filtration and if the Ilford Multigrade Filters are used, or an Ilford multigrade enlarger head, a full range of grades will be available. Used without filtration the paper will yield a typical mid contrast of 2-3.
Surface qualities:
- Gloss [code: 1K]: when left to dry naturally, this yields a delightfully smooth low gloss finish. Or, can be glazed in the traditional way to deliver a very high gloss surface.
- Semi-Matte [code: 24K]: a beautiful matte finish with a very subtle sheen. Emulated by many inkjet paper products!
Washing after processing
As a fibre based paper please be aware of the extended washing requirements due to it’s lack of plastic coating (present in resin coated RC papers). This is a good video introduction to working with FB papers:
If you don’t have a darkroom in which to try this paper – there can be no better reason to put one together! Remember, a darkroom can be simply a blacked out room for a couple of hours, you don’t need a dedicated space.
