Kodak TRI-X is possibly the most legendary black and white photographic film, made this way by some of the greatest names in photography with some of the most enduring images of the 20th Century, and into the 21st. Released in 1954 (in 35mm and roll film), aimed squarely at photojournalists, it was the first fast film for general use. Over the years it has been refined and it remains one of the most flexible films in exposure. A superb all rounder, especially in 35mm, Tri-X is perfect for shooting on the move. Depending on development type, it can be quite gritty, and this is one of the aspects that attracts photographers. Contrast is higher than its opposite number from Ilford, HP5 and consequently final images are quite ‘punchy’ – and this is also a popular feature. (Of course, it’s very easy to increase contrast with HP5, either in development or in post production). Kodak Tri-X can easily be pushed to ISO 800 or 1600 and it’s not uncommon for customers to ask us to push up to 3200, where it still performs, albeit with increased contrast. If you develop your own black and white, D75/ID11 will deliver great results, or if you prefer a liquid concentrate, have a look at Kodak ID11 or Tetenal Ultrafin. Saying this, many other developers will offer excellent performance too.

If you prefer to have your film developed by a lab, at Ag we obtain very consistent results as we operate within extremely tight parameters. Consequently this makes our development very predictable, time after time. Click here for our black and white processing page for the highest quality processing and the fastest turnaround.
