Developed by Kodak, and patented under US Patent 5756271, around 20 years ago (ie. only yesterday in B&W film developer terms!), Kodak XTOL is a state of the art, fine grain, solvent developer, using sodium isoascorbate (ascorbic acid, vitamin C) as one of the developing agents. This developer has found a lot of favour with photographers and professional labs as an excellent all round developer offering fine grain and excellent sharpness, all rolled into one. The other developing agent in XTOL is 4-Hydroxymethyl-4-methyl-1-phenyl-3-pyrazolidone (a form of Phenidone), just in case anyone was interested.
