Rollei 400S is a unique black and white 35mm film with extended red sensitivity up to 750nm, making it a great choice for fine art photography, landscape work, and creative infrared-style effects when used with a deep red filter. Originally derived from Agfa Aviphot Pan400S—an aerial surveillance film—this emulsion was designed for high-resolution mapping, offering exceptional detail and contrast.

Despite its ISO 400 label, we recommend rating it closer to ISO 200 to retain optimal shadow detail and avoid underexposure. The film is not suitable for push processing and performs best when shot within its native range. This film excels in situations where high edge sharpness, fine grain, and infrared response offer creative possibilities that traditional black and white films can’t match.
